Benue Intensifies Urban Renewal, Moves Against Illegal Structures in Makurdi
The Benue State Government has intensified efforts to tackle illegal structures, reclaim encroached public properties, and clear blocked drainage channels in Makurdi as part of measures to address flooding, improve public safety, and restore urban infrastructure.
The renewed enforcement drive follows recent building collapses and severe flooding that claimed a life and submerged homes in affected areas.
The Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Roy Ashirga Terna, and the General Manager of the Benue State Urban Development Board (BSUDB), Town Planner Ternongo Elias Mede, led an inspection of collapsed buildings opposite Intercontinental College of Technology along New Otukpo Road and other flood-prone locations. The team also inspected unauthorised structures, recycling sites, and encroached government properties.
Hon. Terna reaffirmed Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s commitment to urban renewal, warning that structures erected without the required approvals would face enforcement action. He said investigations had been concluded in the affected areas and that community leaders had agreed to cooperate with the government in removing identified structures and providing functional drainage channels and access roads.
The Commissioner stressed that the government would enforce approved development plans and would not compensate those who violated building regulations. He also sympathised with victims of the recent flooding and building collapses, assuring residents of the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
The inspection extended to abandoned and dilapidated buildings and public facilities belonging to various state institutions, including the Civil Service Commission, Health Management Board, Benue Agricultural and Rural Development Agency (BNARDA), Bureau for Archives and Records, and Benue Rural and Non-Governmental Development Agency (BERNEDA).
Mr. Mede explained that the exercise was in line with the Governor’s directive to rehabilitate neglected infrastructure and address unplanned development and inadequate drainage, which contribute to flooding in parts of Makurdi.
Mrs. Elizabeth Asongo, representing the Secretary to the State Government, commended the initiative and reaffirmed the support of the Office of the Secretary to the State Government. The Ministry also warned owners of abandoned and dilapidated buildings to renovate their properties or risk government action.
The urban renewal campaign aims to improve drainage, reopen access roads, reclaim public assets, and enhance sanitation, public safety, and the overall appearance of Makurdi.
